Pre-Searing is the "introduction" when everything looks nice. It's where you start.. you go into Post-Searing when you talk to Tydus and go through the Academy...
The Searing is the time when you are in the academy.. they say it is a timespan of 2 years... gameplay time... we're talking few minutes |

Basicaly "searing" is when you go from the nice cuddly world of old ascalon to the nasty harder part of the game.

The game is broken up into two parts....in an attempt to save the story line so you don't ruin it for yourself, there is a pre-sear and a post-sear. When you start the game you are in what's refered to as pre-sear. It's very much a tutorial for the rest of the game. You've probably heard about entering the Academy by this point. I would suggest not doing so until you have completed the majority(preferably all) of the quests available in pre-sear. Once you enter the academy the real game starts...which is refered to as Post-Sear =)

A new question, maybe, but I wouldn't consider a noob question. We all had to start somewhere, and just asking a question because you aren't currently far in the game doesn't really mean anything bad at all.
I'd consider a noob question to be something more like "OMGWTFBBQ WHY DOES MY LEVEL 20 W/MO GET DESTROYED EVEN THOUGH I MAXED OUT MY HEALING PRAYERS LOLZ AND WHY DOESN'T MY FIERY DRAGON SWORD DO NO DAMAGE!!11!!1!1oneone!1one" |
